The history, artists, and philosophy behind the acoustic sculpture.
The Wave Organ was conceived as an exploration of the boundary between human-made structures and natural forces. It is not an instrument played by human hands, but rather a mechanism through which the ocean articulates its presence.
By capturing the rhythmic surge of the tides, the installation produces a series of low, murmuring tones—a sonic reflection of the environment's current state. When the water is calm, the organ sighs. During turbulent weather, it speaks with deep, percussive authority.
The physical structure is primarily composed of repurposed civic materials. Carved granite blocks, reclaimed marble from historic cemeteries, and robust concrete form the terraces. Embedded within this stone matrix are over twenty PVC pipes extending into the water at various depths.
